Beyond Perfume: The Deodorants & Body Sprays People Are Searching For

Perfume gets most of the spotlight, but for a lot of people, the first fragrance decision of the day happens with a deodorant or body spray — not a bottle of eau de parfum. Lately, a specific mix of drugstore classics and "clean" newcomers has been dominating searches. Here's what's behind the trend.

The Classic Body Sprays: Axe

Axe Black and Axe Phoenix are two of the longest-running names in the body spray category, and they're still searched heavily today — mostly by people either revisiting a scent from their teenage years or discovering it for the first time. Axe Black leans into a deep, woody-aromatic profile that reads more "grown-up" than the brand's earlier releases, while Phoenix sticks closer to Axe's signature citrusy-woody formula that made the brand a household name in the first place. Both are affordable, widely available, and easy to layer under a proper cologne if you want more staying power.

The "Clean" Deodorant Movement

A big part of what's driving deodorant searches lately isn't nostalgia — it's ingredients. Native Deodorant helped popularize the idea of a "clean," aluminum-free deodorant made with simpler ingredient lists, and it's remained a steady search term because people either love the switch or want to understand what they're getting into before trying it.

Lume Deodorant takes that idea further, marketing itself as safe for use beyond just the underarms. It's built a loyal following, partly through direct-to-consumer marketing and partly because it addresses a genuine gap: most traditional deodorants aren't formulated — or marketed — for whole-body use.

Carpe Deodorant rounds out the "clean but targeted" category, with a formula built specifically around managing sweat more effectively rather than just masking odor — a distinction that matters if antiperspirant strength is your main concern.

Aluminum-Free vs. Antiperspirant: What Actually Matters

If you're weighing a switch from a traditional antiperspirant to one of these newer options, the core difference comes down to function, not just ingredients:

  • Antiperspirants (most classic drugstore sticks) work by temporarily blocking sweat glands, which also reduces odor since less moisture means less bacterial activity.
  • Aluminum-free deodorants (Native, Lume) don't block sweat — they focus on neutralizing odor instead, usually through a combination of odor-absorbing ingredients and antibacterial agents.

Neither approach is objectively "better" — it depends on whether heavy sweating is a concern for you, or whether odor control alone is enough. A lot of people switching to aluminum-free options do so gradually, and some report an adjustment period of a few weeks as their body recalibrates.

Picking Between Body Spray and Deodorant

The honest answer: they solve different problems. A body spray like Axe Black or Phoenix adds a light layer of fragrance but isn't formulated to manage sweat or odor throughout the day the way a dedicated deodorant is. Most people get the best results layering the two — a proper deodorant underneath, and a light spritz of body spray or cologne on top for scent.

If you're building out a personal care routine and want your daily deodorant and your signature scent to actually complement each other rather than clash, it's worth checking that your deodorant is unscented or very mild — otherwise it can compete with (or muddy) whatever perfume or cologne you layer over it.

Whether you're sticking with a classic body spray or exploring the clean-deodorant space for the first time, the current search trends suggest one thing clearly: more people are paying closer attention to what's actually in their daily routine, not just how it smells on the shelf.
